Documentary photography workshops in Laos

South Asia Visual Documentary Collective brings documentary photography, visual storytelling and field-based learning together. Our approach begins with observation, listening and respect for the people whose lives shape a story.

In Don Khon, within Si Phan Don in southern Laos, the Mekong provides a setting for exploring river communities, fishing livelihoods and environmental change. Fieldwork responds to the conditions of a place: light, weather, river movement and the routines of everyday life.

Learning through field practice

Our field approach centres on developing a story rather than collecting isolated images. It includes:

  • Approaching people and places with care, and understanding when to step back.
  • Observing everyday life and building a clearer sense of context.
  • Working with available light and the practical conditions of the field.
  • Considering consent, representation and the consequences of publication.
  • Editing and sequencing photographs into a coherent visual narrative.

Don Khon and the Mekong

Don Khon lies within the Four Thousand Islands, also known as Si Phan Don, in Champasak Province, southern Laos. This is a working river landscape, where fishing, family life and seasonal changes shape how people move and work.

Our interest is in understanding this context and working responsibly within it. Access and field encounters depend on local circumstances and relationships.

Program availability

Future dates, fees and mentor participation are confirmed directly with the collective. This page does not announce an open departure.

Our May 2026 program archive shows the outline of a seven-day field program in Don Khon, Don Det and nearby river communities. Registration for those dates is closed. The archived travel and transfer arrangements and accommodation and meal information describe that past outline, rather than a current offer.
